Maurice Z. Cain

Appearance

Physical Desription
Maurice, scion of the esteemed Cain bloodline, carries the legacy of Warmages with a touch of half-elf ancestry. Although born to human parents, he embodies qualities of his ancient forebears. Towering at an impressive height over six feet, Maurice’s presence is as commanding as his weight, just shy of 225 pounds. Under the cover of night, his skin takes on a dark brown hue, while daylight reveals a smooth umber shade that marks him unmistakably as the progeny of Dalaran’s renowned Noble Warmage, Lady Archmage Briana Cain. His remarkable stature is matched by a well-defined physique, the result of rigorous training as an Argent Paladin and the tribal orcish strength conditioning imparted by his stepfather, Krurg Fullguard. Despite his imposing presence, Maurice harbors a trace of modesty; attention drawn away from his face can render him slightly embarrassed, leading him to avert his gaze. This humility is rooted in the wisdom imparted by his stepfather, who remarked on the blessings of maturity even among humans. Hence, Maurice often opts for robes, preferring their comfort and the discretion they afford over the confinement of trousers.
Personality
Maurice's innate curiosity and gentle demeanor belie his stature as a formidable fighter and adept warrior, trained in a plethora of weapons. Rather than relying on brute force, he is an optimistic realist who favors intellect and ingenuity to navigate through seemingly insurmountable challenges. In social circles, Maurice thrives in the company of a select few, cherishing moments with close friends and family. His reserved nature stems from his noble upbringing in Dalaran, coupled with a sense of inadequacy from not possessing the Arcane prowess of his celebrated mother. Although Lady Cain endeavored to cultivate sociability in her son by exposing him to numerous balls and banquets, Maurice found contentment in being the unassuming presence in the room, quietly relishing the adoration of ladies who delighted in his charm.

Childhood
Silent Born Heart
November 10th, Year 8
Birth
On a rainy night in the city of Dalaran, the esteemed Warmage Briana Cain stumbled into the local clinic. Her body bore the marks of magical combat, and her battle-worn clothes were in tatters. Adding to her list of concerns was a visibly pregnant belly. As she crossed the threshold, the pangs of labor overtook her.The agonizing hours she endured, coupled with her magical injuries, left her feeling as if she were in the depths of despair. However, true anguish seized her heart when the nurse conveyed that she couldn't detect the baby's heartbeat. Amidst her own anguished cries, the infant's cries pierced the air, transforming the room's panic and despair into a wave of relief and joy as the mother cradled her newborn son, whom she named Maurice.
Early Life
With his mother often away, fulfilling her duties as both a Warmage and a Noble, Maurice frequently found himself confined indoors due to his heart condition. Whether within his family's grand estate, the city's vast library, or occasionally the mage academy, he diligently pursued his ambition to follow in his mother's footsteps as a mage. He dedicated any free moment he could find to immerse himself in the ancient tomes and spellbooks left behind by his ancestors. The Cain family's legacy in the Arcane arts was renowned, particularly for their role in producing some of Dalaran's most illustrious battlemages. However, it appeared that Maurice's magical talents fell short, preventing him from enrolling in the Dalaran School of Magical Arts due to his lack of Arcane aptitude. Despite this setback, Maurice surprisingly discovered an exceptional ability to harness the Light, making him the first Cain since the First War to be called to a life of priesthood. One day, while tending to his chores in the small chapel, Maurice encountered three children who would profoundly influence his life. There was Gemmy, a dwarf; Ettran, a high elf; and Matties, a human from the mage school. They were gathered around books that unmistakably belonged to the chapel, not to them. However, when invited to read along, Maurice's curiosity got the better of him, marking the beginning of a friendship that would endure unbroken.
Teenage Years
At the tender age of twelve, when the undead assaults besieged his hometown, Maurice and his companion were sent to Hearthglen by their parents. Regrettably, their situation worsened when another wave of undead attacks struck only a few months later, until the Scarlet Crusade assumed control of the fortress.During this period, Maurice's animosity toward the Scarlets intensified, particularly towards a figure known as Thonaris. His antipathy grew not only because of the unstable members but also because of the hardships they inflicted on his friends, Gemmy and Ettran, who were not of human origin. However, as time passed, events unfolded, including the attack and exile of Lord Fordring, which compelled Maurice to endure the difficulties imposed by the Scarlets until the opportunity to relocate to Light's Hope arose. When the decision to move finally came, Maurice and his friends were personally taken care of. Maurice found himself bewildered when his mother returned, having played a role in securing Dalaran. She now held the title of Archmage, and, to his surprise, an orc stood beside her, hand in hand.
"Well she did try to kill me first...."
A Protector, A Teacher, A Father
Maurice was hesitant to trust Krurg. He frequently distanced himself from the orc and his companions, avoiding conversation when Krurg attempted to engage with him. Maurice had delved into books about orcs and their history, especially during the First War. These texts portrayed orcs as relentless monsters, driven to conquer a world not their own, willing to slay anyone in their path. They were depicted as ruthless creatures who had been confined in internment camps until recently. His skepticism endured for several more months until his mother had to return to Dalaran, leaving him in Hearthglen with Krurg. Maurice disapproved of this arrangement and decided to flee from Hearthglen to reunite with his mother. However, he soon found himself outnumbered and trapped by wandering undead as he journeyed alone. As his heart began to falter and the undead closed in, Maurice's world plunged into darkness. The last thing he perceived before losing consciousness was a massive green hand above him, and an axe striking down an approaching undead. When he awoke in the middle of the night, he sensed the presence of someone on his bed, and, to his astonishment, it was Krurg."You may not be my son, but I will always watch over you as if you were my own," Krurg Fullguard declared.

Journey of the Seeker
Year 24
Sleep, Eat, Fight
After his near-death ordeal, Maurice felt frail and somewhat anxious. The realization that he might not have much time left in this world haunted him. What if his heart failed, and none of his friends or family were there to rescue him? He harbored a deep fear of perishing alone. As he roamed Hearthglen, aiding the Paladins, he began to perceive things in a new light, or perhaps, with a fresh perspective. Summoning his courage, he implored Krurg to commence his training. Initially hesitant, Krurg, akin to a caring parent, relented due to Maurice's condition. The sight of his soon-to-be stepson pleading for guidance in becoming a paladin evoked paternal sentiments in him. And if Krurg were a true orc, he recognized the need for a strong and fearless son, as dictated by tradition. The training proved arduous, often causing Maurice to faint when he managed to spend time with his friends. Tasks ranging from relentless running to hauling logs of wood, mining, and engaging in brawls were part of Krurg's strategy to mold Maurice into a human imbued with the strength and resilience of an orc. Through sheer determination, he succeeded, ensuring that Maurice would rest only one day each week before resuming training.Despite constant thoughts of giving up, each day that Krurg, and on rare occasions, his mother, escorted him back home, Maurice remained resolute. He held onto the reasons for his transformation – not only to stand on his own two feet but also to provide care for those who had cared for him. Days transformed into months, and months into years, until one day, he gazed into the mirror and barely recognized himself. Broad shoulders, muscles akin to Krurg's, and a substantial growth spurt all over concerned him greatly, prompting him to don robes almost all the time.
Temporary Goodbyes
With the majority of the Horde and the Alliance in Outland, there were not many new recruits joining the ranks of the Argent Crusade. Maurice held the idea of becoming a paladin close to his heart and continued his training diligently, but a series of bad news soon came his way. His mother and Krurg had to return to Dalaran, accompanied by Mattise, who was eager to resume her studies, and Gemmy, who had discovered her arcane talent and sought further training. This left only Maurice and Ettran in Hearthglen, as Ettran returned to Silvermoon City. Maurice felt troubled by the situation. As much as he wanted to follow someone, he couldn't help but feel compelled to continue his training, as he believed it was his destiny. When the day came for each of them to depart, he embraced every one of them and shared one final friendly spar with Ettran before bidding farewell to the high elf. Then... loneliness enveloped him.

The Reunion
Amidst the Scourge's resurgence in Northrend, Maurice journeyed north to join the ranks of the Argent Crusade. But perhaps even more importantly, he sought to reunite with his long-lost friends and family in Dalaran, a city that had surprisingly taken to the skies. Upon his arrival, another unexpected surprise awaited him - the arrival of his newborn half-sister, Rana

Chronicles OF Cain

The Ruthless Purge
Chronicles OF Cain
"Northrend is a frigid, merciless wasteland, where the bone-chilling cold clawed at one's very soul. The tundra is infested with relentless undead horrors, their wretched presence haunting every frozen step I take, while sinister necromancers lurked like shadows in the desolate woods. But let me be perfectly clear: nothing, absolutely nothing, could deter me from embracing my grim destiny."In the heart of Northrend, Maurice felt as if he were perpetually losing something precious. He had left behind Elizabeth, a lover he'd encountered in Hearthglen, now separated from his parents and a helpless newborn baby sister. Even the lives of his comrades hung by a thread, as they were entrusted with safeguarding a priestess named Alana. She had come into possession of the accursed phylactery of Vutrae, a malevolent Lich who sowed chaos and ensnared countless Argent Crusaders into his dark grasp. As Alana and Maurice journeyed through the desolation, their bond deepened in the face of unrelenting terror. Together, they ventured into outposts plagued by unspeakable horrors, where only the unholy combination of a Crusader and Priest could hope to stand against the relentless tide of the undead. However, this respite was short-lived. With each passing day, the undead grew more formidable, and Vutrae's power swelled ominously. A desperate escape plan was set into motion, leading Maurice to a nightmarish Vrykul necromancer camp. There, he unleashed a torrent of unfathomable destruction upon the entire encampment, the night forever etched in history as the Ruthless Purge, a night that would haunt the living for generations. Yet, this gruesome purge exacted a heavy toll, as the boundaries of horror were pushed beyond imagination.
Upon his return to Alana, Maurice discovered that the Vutrae had seized control of her body, amassing an undead horde that was rampaging across the Howling Fjord, leaving a trail of devastation en route to Icecrown Citadel. They razed villages and obliterated settlements in their wake. Faced with the harrowing decision to confront Alana, Maurice found himself incapacitated by his reluctance to harm her. In the midst of battle, the Lich inflicted a grievous wound upon him. However, Maurice narrowly managed to escape the clutches of death, thanks to a Hearthstone— a precious gift from his mother years before— which whisked him away to safety.
"He made his final stand against a Lich and his stolen friend."
During his convalescence, Maurice alerted the Argent Dawn to the impending onslaught, yet they advised him to stand down—a directive they knew he would not heed. After mending his fractured bones and consulting with Krurg, Maurice's resolve led him once again into the frigid expanse of Northrend. He journeyed to Wintergarde Keep, where he valiantly faced off against the Lich and his dear friend now turned foe, Alana. The aftermath was grim; Alana vanished without a trace, and with the cessation of the Lich King's war, Maurice, bearing the weight of loss and valor, retired from the Argent Dawn.

The Fires of Grim Batol
Chronicles OF Cain
Maurice's life returned to a semblance of normalcy, his family safe and content, the days peaceful. Engaged in sporadic missions for the Kirin Tor with his comrades, tranquility reigned until the cataclysmic events incited by Deathwing and the fall of Theramore disrupted the calm. In the midst of this turmoil, Maurice faced a personal crisis: his friends Mattise and Ettran vanished on an assignment for the Kirin Tor. Fresh from a successful mission against a cabal of rogue dark mages, Maurice, alongside Gemmy, learned of their disappearance. Driven by loyalty, he hastened to Stormwind, the city still reeling from Deathwing's devastation.Determined to find his friends, Maurice scoured the recovering city for leads, even seeking knowledge from its shadier denizens—the warlocks—who supplied him with the whereabouts of the Twilight's Hammer. The trail led him to the forsaken halls of Grim Batol, a stronghold where the cult was known to imprison and sometimes sacrifice their captives.Fueled by urgency, Maurice plunged into the heart of the desecrated city, confronting its malevolent inhabitants. With Faithkeeper in hand, he unleashed torrents of sacred Light, intent on obliterating every trace of the cult and its dark deities. Cultists, ogres, and wyrms alike fell before his righteous fury, none spared from his crusade of cleansing. Yet, with each skirmish, a creeping shadow began to eclipse his luminance, a growing darkness in his heart that threatened to extinguish the very Light he wielded.
In the shadowed city of Grim Batol, a macabre tableau unfolded—prisoners ensnared in iron cages, their limbs savagely mutilated to quash any whispers of escape. This grotesque scene ignited a visceral rage within Maurice as he navigated the city's charnel grounds. His path became an inferno, each freed soul a defiance against the darkness, even as his own heart quivered on the brink of collapse. Desperation clawed at him, yet he fought back the encroaching dread, etching a rune of fortitude over his pounding chest—a beacon of strength amidst the encircling gloom. Bound to his grim purpose, Maurice's conviction burned brighter than fear, determined to see his mission through, be it in the realm of the living or the damned.
"Without so much as a plan, he threw himself into the darkness..."
Two days he spent, traversing the bleak expanse of Grim Batol, in search of Mattise and Ettran. With each inquiry to the prisoners, his hope waned, overshadowed by a growing sense of grief. In an open space, amidst cages crammed with emaciated captives, he found Ettran. The elf's body was skeletal, barely clinging to life, as he clutched the lifeless form of Mattise. Their wedding bands, symbols of enduring love, shimmered faintly in the gloom, stark against the extinguishing flame of vengeance.Gemmy's cries of anguish at the sight of her fallen friends echoed in his memory. The city would grieve profoundly, honoring the lost son and daughter with solemn tributes. Meanwhile, Maurice, overwhelmed by sorrow, chose isolation. He left Dalaran silently, seeking solace from his anguish, aware that vengeance would not resurrect the fallen. Yet, his resolve remained unshaken – he vowed to quench his thirst for retribution in the blood of the Twilight.

An Unforgiving Sin
Chronicles OF Cain
Bravery, hubris, and arrogance intertwined as Maurice roamed the shadowed realm of Revendreth. His quest: to uncover clues about the enigmatic Book. Yet, the whispers he encountered wove a single narrative, all paths converging towards Castle Nathria and its formidable overlord, Sire Denathrius, the Lord of the Venthyr.Undeterred, Maurice embarked on a solitary venture, navigating the labyrinthine halls and corridors of the Castle. His pursuit of the Book, however, led to an inevitable confrontation with Sire Denathrius. It was a battle steeped in asymmetry, pitting Maurice's resolve against the overwhelming might of the Sire.
"Months would pass as he went about Revendreth causing havoc..."
After his defeat by Denathrius, Maurice endured a harrowing ordeal: he was imprisoned and subjected to soul experiments, repurposed as an anima siphon. His liberation came unexpectedly, through the heroes who stormed Castle Nathria. However, in his bewildered and frenzied state, Maurice betrayed his rescuers, fleeing the scene in desperate haste. In the ensuing months, he became a figure of chaos in Revendreth, his unique fusion of hemomancy and the Light making him a formidable and elusive adversary.Eventually, Prince Renethal recognized Maurice's potential as a powerful asset. He was captured and brought in chains, his tumultuous soul pacified and senses restored. The ordeal altered Maurice's abilities: his command of the Light was diminished, while his blood magic skills, albeit still rudimentary, were enhanced. Intrigued by the origins of this newfound power, Maurice decided to return to Azeroth, armed with a Sinstone that hinted at his destined return to Revendreth upon death. However, Maurice's focus remained on unraveling the mysteries of his present life. Determined to understand how he embarked on the path of a Holy Hemomancer, he set out to explore the depths and origins of his unique powers, undeterred by the foreboding prophecy of his afterlife.

Light Chasers
Paladin from the Other World
In his relentless pursuit to understand Hemomancy and its mysterious connection to him, Maurice dedicated countless days to scouring the Cain family Archives in Dalaran. His search was not just for knowledge about the arcane art, but also to uncover secrets his mother had kept hidden - the legacy of the Cain lineage and the mysteries surrounding his maternal ancestors.Amidst the dusty tomes and ancient scrolls, Maurice stumbled upon an enigmatic book, distinct in its appearance and securely sealed. It bore a magical lock that could only be undone by a mage of the Cain bloodline. This is where Rana, his younger sister, came into the picture. Despite her youth, she effortlessly unlocked the book with her burgeoning magical skills. However, as soon as the book was opened, an unforeseen event occurred. Maurice was suddenly and forcibly pulled into the book, transported to a realm starkly different from anything he had known. This unexpected journey marked the beginning of a new chapter in his quest, plunging him into an otherworldly adventure far beyond the confines of the Cain family library.
"...users of the Light were seen as an outcast and terrorists."
Transported to the unfamiliar realm of Irali, Maurice discovered a stark transformation in his abilities. In Irali, his hemomancy powers were nullified, and he found himself fully in sync with the Light once again. However, this change brought its own challenges: in Irali, users of the Light were ostracized and deemed terrorists by the populace. The city's authorities, a group of elves known as the Light Chasers, were notorious for capturing and executing those aligned with the Light.Refusing to be a bystander in a world spiraling into oppression, Maurice aligned himself with the Lost Force, a band of rebels and revolutionaries. He aided them in liberating imprisoned rebels and amassing a formidable resistance. Their ultimate goal was to overthrow the Light Chasers and the corrupt king ruling Irali. The conflict culminated at the devastated remains of the Castle, where, just as victory was within grasp, Maurice was abruptly snatched back into Azeroth.Awakening in his own world, he found himself surrounded by his family. His mother revealed a startling truth: the adventure in the book, though fictional, had been altered by his involvement. The original narrative doomed the Lost Force to failure, but Maurice's actions had rewritten this fate. As she spoke, the book's title transformed before their eyes, from 'The Grand Light Chasers' to 'The Victory of the Lost Force', a testament to the impact of Maurice's journey in the world of Irali.

Gran
In the hallowed confines of Dalaran's chapel, Maurice encountered a character who claimed to be Azeroth's famed merchant, Garbtaxamis. This goblin, a trader of ancient weapons, tomes, and artifacts, was known for his dealings, though not always for their authenticity. Maurice, wise to the ways of such traders, was skeptical of the goblin's claims. However, his interest was piqued by an unusual item in the merchant's collection: a gryphon egg.Seizing an opportunity, Maurice struck a deal with the goblin. In exchange for his silence about the trader's dubious practices, he acquired the gryphon egg. With his mother frequently absent from the city, Maurice managed to conceal the egg within the estate's gardens. But fate had other plans. The gryphon hatched during his absence, and to his dismay, it was his mother who discovered the new arrival. Naturally, she was incensed - a typical reaction for any parent confronted with such a surprise.Maurice's time with the gryphon, whom he named Gran, was brief yet impactful. In just a year, Gran grew considerably, necessitating relocation to Aerie Peaks for proper training. Maurice visited Gran regularly, watching him transform into a magnificent flyer. Seizing the moment, Maurice began to learn the art of flying himself, quickly excelling and performing daring stunts that even seasoned dwarven flyers considered perilous. His flight instructor once remarked, with a mix of admiration and concern, "That lad flies like he's got seconds to live." Maurice's daring in the air became as notable as his adventures on the ground, marking another chapter in his extraordinary life.

GT, abandoned by its creator and with nowhere to turn, requested to accompany Maurice on his adventures. Maurice agreed, and thus began a unique camaraderie between them. GT, despite its rusted frame and malfunctioning scanner, endeavored to assist Maurice in every possible way. In turn, Maurice became GT's guardian, protecting the little robot as they journeyed together. However, the time came when they needed to part ways temporarily. Maurice realized that GT required substantial repairs to continue their adventures. Fortuitously, a certain prince offered his assistance in this endeavor, resulting in the transformation of GT into GT-2.0. The upgraded version was shinier, stronger, and noticeably happier, a stark contrast to its former self. GT-2.0's joy was palpable upon reuniting with Maurice, its friend and protector.Maurice's first words upon discovering GT encapsulate their bond: "Hey there little guy, you alright?" This simple inquiry marked the beginning of a unique friendship, one that would continue to evolve and strengthen over the course of their shared adventures.
